This amulet is similar to amulets known as "Tanfouk" which are belived to have properties in healing wounds and averting the evil eye.
"Tuareg have long vieved jewellery as a means of barter, to be traded if necessary for an indigo turban, an ebroidered blouse or even for millet. ... Those more remote from the frontiers of savannah still prefer silver jewellery." [1].
